An article published in the American Printer magazine last year pointed out that many people currently regard thermal as an expensive technology specifically designed for high-volume printing. In fact, this is a misunderstanding of thermal CTP.

Myth: Thermal CTP is expensive

Violet laser imaging has been described as the most economical method for making digital printing plates. The article points out that this is only a conclusion based on the price of the CTP of the purple laser, and does not consider the total price actually paid by the user. Just as a car bought at a low price of $ 1,000 does not guarantee that the future costs (such as gasoline, repairs, etc.) will be very low. It is unreasonable to choose CTP based solely on the price of hardware. Thermal CTP can reduce many processing costs and reduce the overall printing cost. For example, the price of thermal CTP laser diodes is 100 times cheaper than the cheapest visible laser light source. Thermal CTP does not require safety lights and dark rooms, which can reduce facility costs and improve the working environment. In addition, the storage of thermal plates is also more reliable than some visible light CTP plates, which can save the cost of reprinting of live parts. Compared with the silver salt CTP plate processing device, the thermal plate processing device requires less maintenance, the service life of the thermal diode is longer than that of the visible light laser, and the loss caused by interrupting production due to replacement of the laser is also small.

Misunderstanding 2: There are few suppliers of thermal plates, and the plate materials are expensive

In fact, there are more suppliers of thermal plates than violet laser plates on the market today. There are only three or four manufacturers of purple laser plates, while there are as many as 28 manufacturers of thermal plates. Misunderstanding 3: Thermal CTP is only used by large printing houses that print long-form and live

Violet laser is aimed at printing plants with less printing volume, but this does not mean that thermal CTP is not suitable for this kind of market. Small printing plants lack complete testing methods, and most of them have to imitate the model of large units purchasing CTP, making it difficult to make their own decision to choose CTP. They can choose either purple laser CTP (because it is described as almost as good as thermal) or thermal CTP. A survey shows that more than 10% of the CTPs that have been installed have been left idle. Considering that most CTP equipment has been installed for less than 5 years, it is really shocking that 10% of CTPs have been idle. Obviously, some printing plants buy outdated, poorly performing or expensive operating CTP systems, which are difficult to play a role in production and have no value for resale. The thermal CTP system has the advantages of being upgradeable and easy to resell. Relevant data shows that the sales of thermal CTP plates are more than 50% higher than that of visible light plates, and the sales ratio of thermal CTP to purple laser CTP is 3: 1.

Misunderstanding No. 4: Violet laser CTP has the same quality as thermal CTP
