Mountain, our friend

At 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tanzen Norga overcame a thousand hardships and climbed the summit of Everest from the southern slope. In the 15 minutes that followed, they did two things: They raised pictures of the United States, Britain, India, and Nepal hail flying up each other; they dug two holes in the snow and put two tokens: a small cross. And a bag of chocolates. These two brief ceremonies have become eternal in the history of human ascension: the footsteps of human beings have finally embarked on the top of the earth.

On May 21 and 22, 2003, the Everest team of China stepped on the height of 8,848.13 meters again.

This year, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the summit of Mount Everest, the China Mountaineering Association, supported by the State Sports General Administration, worked closely with the CCTV and the Tibet Autonomous Region Sports Bureau to organize a group of amateur hobbyists including famous entrepreneurs Wang Shi and Zhang Chaoyang. The “2003 Everest climbing Everest” theme commemorative event was attended by the climbers and professional mountaineers. After nearly two months of tenacious struggle, the 11 team members climbed to the summit of 8884.13 meters in two batches on May 21 and 22 respectively. The earth has inspired the people throughout the country to win the courage and confidence to fight against SARS and promote the development of double victory. Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and president of the country, praised their feats for honoring the motherland in his message.

Climbing and exploring unknown areas

Modern mountaineering originated in the 18th century southern European Alps. The rapid development of industrial civilization and the growing progress of the natural sciences have led to the exploration of geology, geography, meteorology, medicine, human history, animals, plants, and other unknown fields. On August 8, 1786, Geneva doctor Pacal and a companion, Balma, overcame many difficulties, and for the first time climbed Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, at 4,810 meters above sea level, becoming the "first person to eat crabs." In 1787, the young scientist from Geneva, Sauveur, carrying a team of more than 20 people, carrying heavy measuring instruments to overcome difficulties and obstacles and boarding the Mont Blanc, opened the prelude to modern mountaineering. Even today, people are accustomed to calling modern mountain sports “ALPINE”. Since then, the history of modern mountaineering has developed rapidly. In the 200 years since 1986, humanity has climbed 14 peaks in the world that are more than 8,000 meters above the sea and conquered the highest peaks of the seven continents. Many mountains and rivers in various countries have also left human footprints. As one of the modern sports events, mountaineering is becoming more and more popular.

Modern mountaineering can develop rapidly in just over 200 years. In addition to its unique charm, it is essentially related to the development of human social civilization. It is associated with marine adventures, aerial adventures, and desert adventures. Adventure sports such as polar expeditions are an important way and means for human beings to continuously explore and understand nature. At the end of the 15th century, Columbus discovered that the “New World” was a maritime adventure, the discovery of the New World in the Americas, and Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world. It was the need of Western countries to accelerate the accumulation of primitive capital, find cheap raw materials, labor, and open up overseas markets, but objectively accelerated the country. Exchanges of goods and cultural exchanges between regions have strengthened the application of new science and advanced science and technology, and accelerated the dissemination of new ideas. Marx once commented: "All this marks the dawn of the age of capitalist production." Although the modern mountaineering campaign is still not comparable to the discovery of the New World by Columbus, it also has very important significance for the development of modern science and the progress of human society.

Climbing to achieve our dream

Modern mountaineering is not only loved by people, but also by the governments of various countries, because it is also a symbol of national and national honor. It shows the spirit of fearlessness, bravery and courage, which inspires the spirit of national self-improvement, and it also becomes a country. And the nation’s contribution to all humanity in the world.
